Gun control: This time, it's bipartisan

Gun control: A bipartisan group of representatives and senators have proposed laws banning gun trafficking and purchasing guns for criminals.

By Jim Abrams,?Associated Press / March 4, 2013

Rep. Elijah Cummings (D) of Maryland is part of a bipartisan group of lawmakers announcing a bill in the House of Representatives to make firearms trafficking a federal crime and impose stronger penalties for "straw purchasers" who buy guns for convicted felons and others who are prohibited from buying guns on their own, Washington, Feb. 5.

Gun trafficking and purchasing firearms with the intent of transferring them to someone else would become federal crimes under bipartisan legislation announced by five U.S. senators Monday.

Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Patrick Leahy, a Democrat, said the bill would establish tough penalties for those who buy a firearm or ammunition with the intent of transferring it to a criminal or a person barred from gun ownership, known as a straw purchase. The measure would also make it a crime to smuggle firearms out of the United States.

The Judiciary Committee has taken a lead in considering the gun violence issue following the shooting massacre last December at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, that left 20 children and six educators dead.

Leahy said there is no federal law now that defines either gun trafficking or straw purchasing as crimes.

The legislation will be taken up by the Judiciary Committee on Thursday as part of a package of four bills aimed at reducing gun violence. The others involve regulating assault weapons, enhancing school safety and requiring background checks for all firearm sales.

The proposed legislation would make it a crime to transfer a weapon when a person has "reasonable cause to believe" that the firearm will be used in criminal activity. It contains exemptions for the transfer of a firearm as a gift, or in relation to a legitimate raffle or contest.

While existing law makes it a crime to smuggle firearms into the United States, the Senate proposal would also ban the smuggling of weapons out of the United States. That provision is specifically aimed at the trafficking of arms across the Mexican border.

(AP) ? British customs agents made a creepy discovery when an airline passenger was found with 94 kilograms (207 pounds) of caterpillars in his luggage.

The man claimed they were intended as food for personal consumption.

The U.K. Border Force said Friday that inspectors at London's Gatwick Airport found the dried caterpillars shrink-wrapped in cellophane and packed into hessian bags carried by a passenger travelling from Burkina Faso via Istanbul.

The caterpillars were seized by authorities after the Feb. 23 find because they breached restrictions on importing animal products. The 22-year-old passenger was let off with a warning.

Border Force spokeswoman Ingrid Smith said "the vigilance of our officers has stopped these dried insects from entering the U.K., and possibly posing a risk to our food chain."

Quote:XSEED Games' 2011 release of Corpse Party was a welcome surprise for most fans of JRPG games, as it combined an old-school Super NES-style art design with a disturbing and downright unsettling atmosphere. It permeated throughout the entire game as the group of children stuck in Heavenly Host Elementary tried to find their way out of its horrors. Needless to say, it struck a chord and for that reason the publisher decided to release the second game in the series, titled Book of Shadows.

Yankees' Ichiro Suzuki OK after traffic accident

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Yankees outfielder Ichiro Suzuki said he had no soreness Sunday, one day after being involved in a traffic accident.

Suzuki was on his way home after Saturday's spring training game against Detroit when the accident occurred a few miles from Steinbrenner Field in Tampa.

"Not at all," Suzuki said through a translator when asked whether he felt any discomfort. "My body just didn't react, I guess."

Suzuki said his SUV was totaled in the accident. He had a green light when he was hit by another vehicle in an intersection. The driver of the second vehicle was cited by police.

"The car was turning left and turned into me," Suzuki said. "I slammed on the brakes, but couldn't do anything about it."

Suzuki said his vehicle was struck almost directly in front toward the driver's side.

New York manager Joe Girardi expects Suzuki to play in Tuesday night's exhibition against Atlanta. The Yankees are off on Monday.

No one was injured in the accident.

"I'm very thankful that everybody was OK," Suzuki said. "I feel grateful that there were no big injuries."

Suzuki worked out with teammates who didn't make the trip to Fort Myers for Sunday's exhibition game with Boston and hit in an indoor cage

Left-hander Andy Pettitte threw 34 pitches, including 20 in the first, over two innings during his first simulated game.

"Everything feels really good," Pettitte said. "All my pitches are right where I want them.

Pettitte expects to throw in another simulated game before making his first exhibition appearance.

Closer Mariano Rivera, coming back from knee surgery, made 21 pitches in one inning during his second simulated game. He said his preference would be to next pitch in an exhibition.

"I think we're ready to do that," Rivera said.

Phil Hughes made 37 throws, including 25 from 60 feet, during his initial throwing session since being sidelined two week ago by a bulging disk in his upper back. There is a possibility the right-hander will not be ready for opening day.

"Obviously, I can't have any setbacks," Hughes said. "I just have to take it a day at a time. I know I have to get four or five starts. It's not the worse thing in the world to miss a little time now than have this be an issue going forward."

NOTES: SS Derek Jeter (ankle surgery) said he still has to run the bases full speed before making his exhibition debut. GM Brian Cashman has said Jeter should play in his first game around March 10. ... LHP Boone Logan (tender elbow) hopes to resume throwing Tuesday or Wednesday. ... Minor league OF Slade Heathcott (sprained right thumb) expects to swing a bat Tuesday.

Skier Tina Maze gets emailed death threat

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany (AP) ? World Cup-winning skier Tina Maze was placed under police protection for a super-G race on Sunday after an emailed death threat against her.

The Slovenian finished fourth and had two bodyguards close by after the race which was won by Anna Fenninger of Austria.

The threat came in an email received Saturday afternoon after Maze won the downhill on the same slope and become the first skier to collect more than 2,000 points in a season.

"If somebody is strong and showing good performances and perfect in the thing you are doing, there are people who want to disturb you," Maze said. "I guess it's part of the game but it didn't disturb me that much.

"It shouldn't be part of the game but life is not perfect. It's not nice for me, it's not nice for my team. I haven't seen the email ... they want to ruin your day, ruin the record, but I enjoyed the day 100 percent," Maze said.

Peter Fischer, chief of the organizing committee, said the email came from an anonymous source and was immediately turned over to the police.

"We had to take it seriously, our job is to keep everyone safe here," Fischer said. "Police took over the case and provided protection."

Maze said she had never felt safer in her life, adding "I've had police in front my door all the time since yesterday."

Fenninger beat hometown favorite Maria Hoefl-Riesch by 0.20 of a second on the Kandahar course for her third career victory and second of the season.

American Julia Mancuso was third. She and Maze are still in competition for the season super-G title, which will now be decided at the World Cup finals in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, in two weeks.

Maze is already assured of the overall title and passed 2,000 points by winning the downhill. She now has 2,074 points. Mancuso said she lost Sunday's race in the middle section of the course.

"I was not good in the turning section, I don't know what it is, maybe a question of confidence," said the American, who was second in Friday's super-G on the same slope.

"I am happy to be on the podium, just trying my best every day. I am enjoying it with the sun out. I wish I could have gained some more points on her."

Maze leads Mancuso 420-365 in the super-G standings with a maximum of 100 points up for grabs in the final race.

Like Mancuso, Maze also said she had problems with the jump in the middle section. "It was pretty difficult to find the right line, I didn't do my best but fourth is fine," Maze said.

Maze won the gold medal in the super-G at the world championships last month in Schladming, Austria, while Mancuso took bronze.
