Man City sign Maicon, Sinclair on frenzied deadline day

Manchester City completed a double swoop for Inter Milan defender Maicon and Swansea winger Scott Sinclair as the Premier League champions set the pace in the frantic final hours before the transfer window closes on Friday.

With only a few hours left to bring in new players before the window shuts until January, England's top-flight clubs are engaged in a frenzy of last-minute wheeling and dealing.

City boss Roberto Mancini has endured a frustrating time in the transfer market since the end of last season, but there has been a late flurry of activity at Eastlands and his ?6 million move for Sinclair was followed by the surprise capture of right-back Maicon for ?3 million, as well as the arrival of former Arsenal goalkeeper Richard Wright on a free transfer.

Mancini may not be satisfied with just those three deals and he has also been linked with bids for Benfica midfielder Javi Garcia and Fiorentina defender Matija Nastasic.

To make room for his fresh recruits, Mancini sold Nigel de Jong to AC Milan, while Paraguay striker Roque Santa Cruz moved to Malaga on a season-long loan.

Fulham boss Martin Jol sealed a significant coup for his club as he signed Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov from Manchester United for ?5 million.

Berbatov rejected interest from Juventus, Fiorentina and Tottenham to be reunited with Jol, who worked with the forward at Spurs.

"I'm delighted to have signed for Fulham and I look forward to playing under Martin Jol once again," Berbatov said.

"As soon as I was aware of Fulham's interest my decision to join was an easy one to make."

Jol also brought in former England left-back Kieran Richardson from Sunderland, who then landed Tottenham defender Danny Rose on loan as a replacement.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers continued his Anfield clear-out as Scotland international Charlie Adam was sold to Stoke for ?4 million, while fellow midfielder Jay Spearing joined Bolton on a season-long loan.

Rodgers has been looking to bring in American forward Clint Dempsey from Fulham and that deal could still be on.

"We're hopeful of adding to the squad. There are a number of players we're looking at," Rodgers said on Friday.

Across Merseyside, Everton are close to signing Bryan Oviedo from FC Copenhagen after agreeing a fee for the Costa Rica defender.

Tottenham's Holland midfielder Rafael van der Vaart headed to Germany to re-sign for his former club Hamburg, while the north London club allowed Mexico forward Giovani Dos Santos to move to Real Mallorca.

That could prompt a significant spending spree from Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas, who is reported to be interested in Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Southampton finally signed Gaston Ramirez from Bologna for around ?12 million after chasing the 21-year-old Uruguay playmaker for several weeks.

Swansea, needing a replacement for Sinclair, signed Spain winger Pablo Hernandez from Valencia for a club record ?5.55 million.

Arsenal allowed South Korea striker Park Chu-young to go out on loan to Celta Vigo with a view to a permanent switch, while Denmark striker Nicklas Bendtner agreed a season-long loan with Italian champions Juventus.

Aston Villa signed young striker Jordan Bowery from Chesterfield for ?500,000 and then turned their attention to securing Genk's Belgium striker Christian Benteke and Crewe midfielder Ashley Westwood.

QPR boss Mark Hughes has already signed a host of new players since the end of last season, but he is still in the market for more and confirmed that Marseille defender Stephane Mbia has arrived London for a medical.

Ability to adapt, not time, key to species diversity

The tree of life does not branch evenly.

"Some groups, like beetles and flowering plants, contain nearly incomprehensible species diversity, but the overwhelming majority of groups contain far fewer species," writes a team of researchers online in the journal PLoS Biology.

Groups such as tuataras, which are reptiles that live on New Zealand islands, have few species.

Scientists have blamed time for this discrepancy.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. Long-extinct cousins' genetic mysteries revealed

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Degraded DNA molecules from a group of human relatives who went extinct tens of thousands of years ago have been reassembled using a new technique, yielding a genetic code for the mysterious Denisovans that meets the standard for modern humans.

    2. Bizarre fish has penis on its head
    3. Fungi help create Amazon clouds and rain
    4. 'See' Hurricane Isaac's powerful winds

According to this theory: "All things being equal, older clades (groups) will have had more time for diversity to accumulate than younger clades," writes the team, led by Daniel Rabosky of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

To test this theory, they looked at the relationship between age and species richness across 1,397 major clades of plants, animals and fungi. Collectively, these groups account for more than 1.2 million species.

The theory did not stand up, they said.

"When we look across the tree of life, the age of the group tells us almost nothing about how many species we would expect to find. In most groups, it tells us nothing," said study researcher Michael Alfaro, of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), in a statement.

As an alternative, Alfaro proposes the number of species that can emerge is limited by a particular "adaptive zone." So, the lineage of beetles, sharks or gingkoes each has a limit on how much they can diversify based on the competition they face and what they need to live. ?

When organisms emerge that can take advantage of a new adaptive zone, they will continue to diversify into new species until that zone has reached capacity, Alfaro said in a statement. "What's really driving things is how many times lineages evolve new innovations that move them into new adaptive zones."

Graham Slater, a National Science Foundation?funded postdoctoral researcher at UCLA, also contributed to the study.

(AP) ? Steven Spielberg talked movies with Harvey Weinstein. John Travolta chatted with Bradley Cooper. Dustin Hoffman and Jack Black shared cellphone photos.

Those stars, along with Kerry Washington, Jennifer Lawrence, Kelsey Grammer, Christina Hendricks and others, lit up the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's annual summer luncheon Thursday at the Beverly Hills Hotel, where the group behind the Golden Globe Awards presented grants and introduced its officers for the coming year.

The stars helped present and accept $1.2 million in grants from the association to organizations around the country that promote film education and preservation.

The Sundance Institute, Film Foundation and American Film Institute were among 40 nonprofit beneficiaries of grants this year.

But the organization's annual luncheon was really about schmoozing with the stars.

"I loved your movie," Weinstein said to Travolta, who stars in Oliver Stone's marijuana drama "Savages." ''I thought your movie was great."

Meanwhile, Hoffman and Black swapped snaps on their iPhones as Washington and Hendricks posed for a photo.

"I am here to get nominated," Hoffman joked as he took the stage. He told the audience he had just turned 75.

"Dustin's 75 and he looks great; I'm 57 and I look like hell!" said the grey-bearded Grammer, who sat with his new wife, Kayte.

Don Johnson was practically unrecognizable with a newly taut face and his long hair wrapped into a bun. He referred to "Scandal" star Washington as "poised, delicious and divine."

Washington said from the stage that she'd gotten close to Black during the luncheon.

"I'm going to call him my dear friend because of the things we've shared this afternoon," she said of the comedian.

Black addressed Spielberg from the podium: "'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Killer' looks incredible," the funnyman said to the director of "Lincoln," a different movie.

Lawrence also joked with the legendary filmmaker.

"I just had to follow Steven Spielberg," she said when she took the stage. "Or you opened for me, actually."

The president of the association, Aida Takla-O'Reilly, also poked fun at the filmmaker, saying the luncheon was especially memorable for her.

"This is the day Steven Spielberg pulled my scarf out of the soup and wiped it for me," she said.

Spielberg thanked the organization for its support of film-preservation efforts that totaled $3.6 million over the past 16 years. Film is "mankind's most original medium," he said.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has given nearly $15 million in grants over the past 18 years from profits generated by the Golden Globe Awards telecast. The 2013 Golden Globes are set for Jan. 13.

I Will Be Retiring Soon What About You | gibLink.com Blog

09 August 2012 Ed A. Bullins

When approaching the twilight of a person?s life, they should not have to worry about income. Unfortunately, most people?s retirement income is not adequate enough to cover their costs.

Another way in which retired persons can generate extra money for living expenses is by previous investment. As part of some company?s 401K options, investing money used for retirement either back into the company or in the stock market can pay large dividends. However, this can be at a risk because nothing is set in stone in the stock market.

Retirement income should be based mainly out of an IRA or pension plan. However, this may not be enough to keep a person in the standard of living at which they are accustomed to.

The reality is you do not want to spend your entire life slaving away at some company. Like pretty much the entire human race, you want to hit a point when you can retire and live out the rest of your life comfortably.

How much should you invest? Well, this all depends on what you need to live on, and what you need for the future. Everyone is different. While effective ways to invest money are important, the portion you invest is also something to put some thought into. Clearly you cannot invest what you do not have.

The key to finding great ways to invest money is by doing a little research in the beginning. This way you can find out your options before getting started.

Decide which retirement plan best suits personal needs and choose between a 401K, IRA, Roth IRA, or investment 401K options. A lot of people who work for corporations and companies are offered a 401k plan in their contract with that business. A 401K is a deduction straight out of a person?s paycheck that gets put into a company account that may or may not have a company match policy.

While there is no set best way to plan someone?s golden years, retirement plans are important to make and maintain so people don?t become burdens to their families and to society in general. Social security is not enough to keep a person in the standard of living at which they are accustomed, so extra support is required. Choose one of these methods and watch the nest egg grow as the light at the end of the tunnel gets brighter.

Relocate to a lower cost of living area. If you are currently living in a major city with high property tax, income tax and sales tax, consider moving to cities or urban centers, or even overseas, where the cost of living is lower to stretch a small retirement income.

If you are used to buying brand name products and paying premium prices, switch to the cheaper alternative to save money. If you have a newer luxury automobile, consider selling it and get an older economy car instead. You get money back from selling the car and save money on lower car insurance.

Speaking of being a writer? | Diabetic Redemption

When I started the post?Writing for my life?the other day, about not being sure if I should call myself a writer,?I intended to share some nice information about steps I have taken to support my sense of being a writer.

I bought a desk ? a nice one, for not too much money ? and my friend Fred and I will pick it up and assemble it next week. ?I cannot even say how nice it will be to sit at a desk to write. ?In celebration, I ordered a Zen garden to keep on it. ?I have always wanted one. ?I?m taking a giant step here ? this is the first big item, (more than $5.00,) that I have bought specifically because I am a writer.

This afternoon, my dear and generous friend D. took me to Staples, and bought me an office chair ? a beautiful big comfortable chair, black and puffy, with great lumbar support.

My chair, Spot

The chair is my birthday present, and it is terribly extravagant and wonderful. ?She wants to sure I?m comfortable when I write, as blogging and writing are so important to me. I am so looking forward to my new desk, and my supportive, comfy chair, and my Zen garden with the Laughing Buddha and the incense burner. ?Tonight, I feel like a writer, and I wouldn?t be cautious about telling anyone at all!

P.S. ?My friend D. has a new car, and she named it Zippy. ?She suggested that I come up with a good name for my chair. ?I considered Millenium Falcon,?and?Black Star?from Babylon 5, but neither of them felt right. ?D. asked if I had considered any regular names, and gave me some examples. ?One of them was perfect: ?my big, beautiful black leather chair is officially named Spot.

Gaza closure sends prices soaring, smugglers say

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) ? Gazans say the sealing of their territory following a weekend attack by Islamic militants on the Egypt-Israel border has sent prices soaring and is leaving hundreds of medical patients stranded.

Egypt says the attackers who killed 16 Egyptian soldiers had help from Gaza. In response, Egypt closed its border crossing and shut down hundreds of smuggling tunnels.

The tunnels deliver key goods to Gaza that Israel ? which controls its other borders ? won't allow in, including construction materials. A tunnel owner who only gave a nickname, Abu Hamam, because of the illegal nature of his business said Tuesday that their price has shot up 40 to 60 percent since the weekend.

A Gaza health official says hundreds of patients are waiting to go to Egypt for medical treatment.

Less Than A Month After Its Mini-Pivot, Tripl Pushes Its New iOS App Out The Door

tripl2After the team at social travel startup Tripl had a change of heart last month, they eventually came to a weighty conclusion -- now that their focus had shifted away from connecting travelers with friends that happened to be nearby, they had to redo the iOS app they had been working on for months. Now, just a few weeks later, Tripl has pushed that new (and free) iOS app out into the wild for users to muck around with. In case you aren't yet familiar with the new Tripl, the service is all about giving users a glimpse into where their friends are at any given moment by pulling in photos and check-ins from Facebook and other social networks -- quite a treat when you're usually cooped up indoors for most of the day like me.

Stocks edge higher amid euro zone hopes

By NBC News wire services

Updated at 2:10 p.m. ET: Stocks extended last week's rally on Monday, hitting fresh three-month highs, as borrowing costs fell in Spain and Italy in expectation of more European Central Bank assistance for the troubled euro zone.

The S&P 500 reached its highest point since early May, near the 1,400 level. A break above that could boost investor confidence.

Sentiment in Spanish and Italian debt markets - at the forefront of the three-year debt crisis - improved, as two-year Spanish yields fell to 3.42 percent on Monday, less than half of a late July high of over 7 percent.

European Central Bank President Mario Draghi has said the ECB plans to buy short-dated bonds to lower borrowing costs to help Europe, which has been mired in a debt disaster. European shares closed at four-month highs.

"If you listen to comments by Draghi, what he's indicating is that we're here to help, but you need to raise your hand, and by doing that, you're also committing yourself to austerity in order to receive these monies," said Jonathan Golub, chief U.S. equity strategist at UBS.

But Golub said central bank action alone was not a panacea, and that his year-end target for the S&P 500 was 1,375, or around 2 percent less than Monday's levels.

"My belief is that ultimately you need to do more than simply supply liquidity to fix these issues. Look at Spain - the economy is contracting, you have high unemployment, and while this eliminates the pressure from high borrowing rates, it doesn't solve those problems."

Meanwhile, a group of investors will rescue embattled market maker Knight Capital Group Inc in a $400 million deal that keeps the company in business, Knight said on Monday. But it comes at a huge cost to investors.

Wall Street rallied on Friday with the S&P 500 marking its fourth straight week of gains on a strong U.S. jobs report and renewed hope that European authorities would act to contain the euro zone's debt crisis through ECB purchases of Italian and Spanish bonds.

Best Buy shares jumped after Richard Schulze, the founder and former chairman, offered to buy the shares he does not already own in the electronics retailer for $24 to $26 each.

Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp shares rose after the information technology services provider raised its full-year adjusted profit forecast.

Of the 411 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported second-quarter earnings through Monday morning, 67.4 percent have reported earnings above analysts' expectations, near the four-quarter average of 68 percent, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Cinemark's quarterly results beat estimates

(Reuters) - Motion picture exhibitor Cinemark Holdings Inc's quarterly results beat analysts' estimates, helped by higher admissions and concession revenues.

Net income rose to $51.6 million, or 45 cents per share, in the second quarter, from $40.4 million, or 35 cents per share, a year earlier.

Quarterly revenue rose 5 percent to $649.6 million.

Sales from admissions rose about 3 percent to $418.1 million, while those from concession rose 6 percent to $201.4 million.

Analysts on average had expected earnings of 37 cents per share, on revenue of $630.7 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Shares of the company closed at $24.05 on the New York Stock Exchange on Friday.

Should NASA Ditch Manned Missions to Mars?

NASA's overarching goal of sending astronauts to Mars may not be worth the time, money and trouble, a prominent researcher says.

NASA's human spaceflight efforts have long been geared toward eventually putting boots on the Red Planet. But the agency should think seriously about ditching this plan, for the benefits of a manned Mars mission may not justify its enormous costs, said space architect Brent Sherwood of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

"Our rationale for exploring Mars, I think, is perhaps fatally weak," Sherwood said during a presentation with NASA's Future In-Space Operations working group Wednesday (Aug. 1).

Sherwood's presentation during a weekly FISO group meeting occurred just days ahead of the huge?NASA Mars rover Curiosity's landing ?on the Red Planet. Curiosity, a 1-ton robot built to explore Mars for two years to determine if microbial life could have ever survived on the planet, will land today (Aug. 5) at 10:31 p.m. PDT (1:31 a.m. EDT, 0531 GMT on Aug. 6).

"I would suggest that maybe instead of whining about not getting enough money, we ought to quit that and redesign our human spaceflight product for success," he added. [Giant Leaps: Top Milestones of Human Spaceflight]

Red Planet dreams

The urge to explore is part of human nature, and Mars has been an inviting target for the better part of a century.

Indeed, researchers began thinking up ways to get our species to the Red Planet before the Space Age even dawned. The famed rocket scientist Wernher von Braun published his seminal book "The Mars Project" in 1948, for example, nine years before humanity launched its first satellite to Earth orbit.

So it's perhaps no surprise that NASA is seeking to get astronauts to Mars. But the space agency isn't legally required to work toward this goal, Sherwood said, citing the NASA Authorization Act of 2010.

According to the Act, "The long-term goal of the human spaceflight and exploration efforts of NASA shall be to expand permanent human presence beyond low-Earth orbit and to do so, where practical, in a manner involving international partners."

The Act doesn't stipulate that sending people to Mars must be part of this process, so NASA has some flexibility. Sherwood thinks the agency should re-examine its human spaceflight program, because pushing for the Red Planet in the next three decades or so may not constitute the best use of NASA's limited resources. $100 billion for six astronauts?

A manned Mars mission would be incredibly expensive. NASA estimates peg the overall expenditures at about $100 billion over 30 or 40 years, Sherwood said, but those numbers may be too low.

The International Space Station (ISS), after all, was initially anticipated to cost $10 billion over 10 years. But it ended up costing 10 times that, and took nearly three decades to assemble.

NASA officials have said the agency will work with international partners on any potential manned Mars mission, so the agency wouldn't have to fork out the entire $100 billion (or however much such an effort ends up costing). But the returns to the agency and the nation could still up being comparatively meager, Sherwood said.

"After all of that investment, and all this commitment sustained over these decades, you get six civil servants on another planet, and probably only two of them are U.S. civil servants, because it's got to be an international project," Sherwood said.

"So maybe that's worth it; I don't know," he added. "I think it may be judged in the grand arc of modern history to be seen as not worth it, and I think that's the risk. But that's the conversation to have."

While reaching Mars would be a triumphant moment for our species, there's unlikely to be much scientific rationale for putting humans on the Red Planet three decades from now, Sherwood said. NASA's robotic explorers have become more and more capable and durable over the last 15 years or so, and there's no reason to think such improvements won't continue.

"The humans are not going to be doing anything close to the kind of science that we're already doing robotically or that we can do on ISS in low-Earth orbit right now," Sherwood said.

And robotic missions ? like NASA's Mars Science Laboratory, which is due to drop the car-size?Curiosity rover on the Red Planet Sunday night ? are cheap by comparison. MSL, the biggest and most ambitious rover ever launched, costs $2.5 billion.

Human spaceflight alternatives

If NASA did decide to turn its human spaceflight efforts away from Mars, where could it direct them? Sherwood gave three alternatives, all of which he said are worth a look.

One is colonizing the moon, which would extend humanity's footprint beyond Earth and teach us how to utilize space-based resources. Sherwood said a focus on lunar settlement could conceivably result in 100 or so people living on Earth's nearest neighbor by 2050.

Another option is to help accelerate the pace of passenger space travel, an effort that NASA is already encouraging via its Commercial Crew Development program. Going more fully down this path could help extend spaceflight to the masses, with potentially thousands of people visiting orbiting hotels and resorts by mid-century, Sherwood said.

Finally, NASA could focus on making space-based solar power ? a long-held dream of futurists and science-fiction writers ? a reality. Building power-beaming stations in space could help secure a clean-energy future for the planet and give our species a foothold in Earth orbit, with perhaps 100 skilled workers living offworld by 2050, Sherwood said.

These three options could all stimulate economic expansion here on Earth and bring more private money into spaceflight, something a manned Mars mission would be unlikely to accomplish, Sherwood said.

Sherwood stressed that he's not against sending astronauts to Mars. He just thinks NASA needs to take a long look at whether or not that should be the ultimate goal of its human spaceflight efforts.

"I love human exploration, and I love the idea of humans to Mars," he said. "But I think there's a problem that we have. And the purpose of this conversation is to try to expose that problem in the terms I've been thinking about it, share that with you and stimulate discussion."
