President Obama salutes local volunteer

HUDSON - President Barack Obama saluted Shirley Dunn for her volunteer work at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point.
"It was a surprise," Dunn said about receiving the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award. She got a letter from the president, a certificate and a pin.
"I wear my pin very proudly" every day on her smock, Dunn said during a Friday phone interview.
Shayne George, CEO of the Hudson-area hospital, and George Niebler, president of volunteers, were all smiles as they presented the award to Dunn.
Few people here have received the honor from the White House, Regional Medical Center spokesman Kurt Conover observed.
To qualify, an individual must have volunteered for a minimum of 15 years and have logged more than 7,500 hours of service, Conover explained.
Dunn started volunteering July 1996 at the hospital. She has devoted 7,900 hours of service.
Dunn serves as the assistant treasurer, which is a very responsible position within the volunteers association, Conover elaborated.
Instrumental in starting the mail courier system years ago, Dunn said she helped develop the color coding system to keep track of the torrent of correspondence received by the hospital's many departments. Then she helped set up a mail courier route.
Dunn marvels at how the hospital has grown over the years. At one time, Regional Medical Center had only two floors before expansion. Many additional buildings have sprung up around the hospital campus on Fivay Road.
One thing has remained the same throughout the years, Dunn remarked. The entire staff always is "very compassionate and very caring."
"She is respected and admired by her peers, the staff and everyone who meets her," Conover commented in a press release.
"It is so nice to walk down the hall and have people say, 'Good morning, Shirley,'" Dunn said.
Her reward? "Put a smile on somebody's face," Dunn concluded.
