MT. PLEASANT, S.C. (March 11, 2012) ? Sophomore Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) earned a hard-fought three-set win at second singles, but Rutgers University Tennis fell to the College of Charleston, 4-1, on Sunday at the CofC Tennis Center. The Scarlet Knights are now 5-5 on the season.
The match was formatted different than a normal NCAA tennis match; with only four singles matches played in addition to one best-two-out-of-three-sets doubles competition.
Petrini, who now owns a 7-3 singles record this season, defeated Caroline Newman, 6-4, in the first set, but dropped the second, 1-6, to force a deciding third set. The frame went back-and-forth, needing a tiebreaker to settle it, but Petrini edged Newman, 7-5, with several key points to pick up the win.
The College of Charleston (8-4) took the doubles match to start and won three singles matchups to earn the team win.
The site of the match was located in the hometown of senior Morgan Ivey (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.).
Rutgers continues its three-match Spring Break trip in South Carolina, taking on Boston University on Monday, March 12 at 10 p.m. in a neutral site matchup at the CofC Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.
